What Is Tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is the process of Removing old mortar and replacing it with New. This may sound simple, but there are a few important steps that Have to be taken if the tuckpointing is going to last. Generally, the Mortar Joints are ground out using an Angle Grinder with Diamond Masonry wheel.

The joints should be ground out over 1 Inch. Many people, even experienced masons often skip this step unfortunately. It is Vital! After the joints are ground out they should ALWAYS Be Cleaned. If the joints are not Deep Enough, or if your adding New Mortar over Dust from the grinding, The Tuckpointing Will Fail!

I have been called to Hundreds of Homes over the years that have been “Tuckpointed” and Failed because these steps were ignored to save time or cost.

After the mortar joints are ground out and Cleaned properly New Mortar is added. Generally Type S Mortar is Used, however depending on the age of the brick, sometimes a heavier lime mix should be used. The mortar used should always be softer than the brick.

Mortar should also be Colored. This is not an exact science like paint. Mortar can be Difficult to get exact, however the finished product should blend in with the structure overall. It will never match Perfectly, but it should match well enough to not draw attention or catch the eye. The more experience the mason has, the better the color should be.

We have been able to work on Dozens Historical buildings and match the mortar to the point that once fully cured its difficult to point out. Its something we take price in doing. After the new mortar is in place it should be left for a short time before striking. The striking gives the mortar a “finished” look and removed excess mortar.

After striking it should sit for a bit longer and then brushed to give it a Clean Finished look.  If you need Masonry Tuckpointing Repair in akron canton ohio, feel free to give us a call.

Why is Tuckpointing Important?

Mortar breaks down over time. It takes Many Years, but eventually it happens. When your brick block or stone start to have Deep joints or missing Mortar, the water has an easier path in. Water, in particular freezing water destroys masonry.

Here in Ohio for instance, we have Mild days with freezing nights every winter. This can mean rain during the day and freezing temperatures over night. With easy access, the water gets in during the day and freezes over night.

When water freezes, it expands. This expansion causes faster deterioration in the mortar and damage to the brick. Keeping the water out is the Best Way to Preserve Your Masonry!

At LAD Masonry we offer a Some of The Best Masonry Tuckpointing Repair in Akron Canton.

How Long Does Tuckpointing Last?

If tuckpointing is done Properly it is a Long Term Repair as opposed to a patch or Quick Fix. If the Joints are ground Deep and Clean Enough With Good Mortar, it can be a Lifetime Repair. If done improperly is could only last a year or two. Usually, Bad Tuckpointing will fail within the first few Winters.
